so my new roomate jill works at the sf day laborer program in the women's programs, and she invited me to meet up with them this morning and be part of a march to support the sf legislation to create municipal IDs for sf residents.
san francisco has been a sanctuary city since 1989 which basically means that supposedly we don't enforce immigration laws or comply with ICE or other federal enforcement. but we all know that having things written down does not necessarily line up with practice.
so the idea behind the municipal ID is that anyone who is a resident in san francisco can get one, regardless of immigration status. this means that folks without papers are given more access to services in the city, can produce ID in the case of the police, can utilize banking services, etc. the neato thing too, is that since folks partner and create coalitions in this city, there was a push early on that folks got to check their own gender boxes for this ID, making it a huge victory for the trans/gender variant community(s) as well.
i went to the hearing today for the proposed legislation after the march, and it looks super promising. a funny moment came when a rep from parks&rec spoke about how this ID would mean that everyone would be able to access their services more easily and that now, there wouldn't be barriers to who got discounts on golfing in the city of san francisco.
phew. i was so worried about my golf game. :)
